Teaching # 13
Hebrews 3:1-6
The Faithful Son

Years ago John Walker was the keeper of the light house on the Robbins Reef at Staten Island under the U.S. Govt. There he lived happily in the faithful discharge of his duties for 4 years.

He was then taken with severe pains and Catherine, his wife, sent to shore for medical help.

The physician ordered John to the hospital at once. As he was being carried to the boat to take him to the hospital he called to his wife as a parting direction, “Mind The Light.” He was faithful to his duty all the way. John Walker never returned to the lighthouse.

BUT Catherine stayed on to Mind the light and carried on the duties so well that she was appointed keeper. Then for more than 30 years she stayed in that lonely spot caring for the beacon to keep mariners from damage on those cruel rocks.

Such stories of faithfulness as this lady and her husband inspire us. The writer of Hebrews brings us similar stories of faithfulness as we examine the faithfulness of Moses and the faithfulness of Christ.

We have seen this far a convincing essay on the superlatives of Christ, how that Christ is better than every one and every thing. A better revelation than the prophets because he is the final revelation. He is the creator and inheritor of everything and because he is the exact image of God and the perfect administrator of the universe. Then we saw that he is also greater than angels, great as they are. In name, worship, nature, in eternity and in destiny as ultimate ruler of all.

Now in 3:1-6 we see another aspect where Christ is ultimately superior, in the area of faithfulness as a High priest.

Here the writer addresses those who are true believers ( 3 recall) as we see in verse 1 he says “Holy Brethren.” And the writer presents 3 ways in which Christ is greater than Moses and that will be our outline.

1. Greater in Office (Apostle, High Priest)

2. Greater in Work (Builder of the House/ vs steward in the house)

3. Greater in Person (Son vs Servant)

First let see Christ is greater than Moses in Office. He says “wherefore, because of all Christ is, therefore, CONSIDER JESUS. Last week we pondered that and looked at some of the titles and descriptions of Christ and how truly wonderful he is.

Now we see Christ’s superior office 1. Apostle 2. High Priest

Apostle is a sent one. An Ambassador with the full authority of the home nation, Jesus has the full authority of heaven. Jesus is God’s special representative to men. It is on this sent one that we are told to fix our eyes or gaze intently.

He is God’s ambassador to man, but he is also High priest , That is Man’s representative in the presence of God, bearing our prayers to God. He is the Apostle, the one in whom God revealed himself fully, but also the perfect embodiment of man’s obedient response to God.

The writer says “Consider This one, the Apostle and high priest of our profession, fix your heart on him, set you love on him you who are “partakers of the heavenly calling.”

The Jews were God’s nation with earthly promises, but here the call is higher, heavenly and we are to intently contemplate him. To these Jewish believers Drop those earthly things, earthly rituals, why hold on to earthly things when we are heavenly.

We don’t NEED the rituals because we have the reality and that is because of the one we profess, our superior Christ, superior in office.

Not only greater than Moses in Office but also in his Works as we see in vv2-4.
This writer doesn’t run Moses down but favorably compares him with Christ. Jesus was faithful as was Moses.

Yu know what the Jews thought of Moses right? The great Lawgiver. He was exalted in their eyes as the man who had spoken face to face with God. He had a position in Jewish mind that was unique. He saw God’s glory and had that glory transferred to him...when he came down from the mountain his face shone. Moses, God’s man, led these people out of Egypt and did many miracles.

But greater than that in their minds was the fact that He was the one who gave the Law. Moses and the law are synonymous in Jewish minds. and Jews and Law went hand in hand. Romans 2 says that the rituals of the law were the Jews BOAST. So Moses was exalted in their minds. Deut. 34:10 refers to Moses after his death “and there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses whom the Lord knew face to face.” did they regard him highly? You Bet! And the writer here is drawing some comparisons to Moses and Christ and he is NOT lessening Moses position, but rather proving the superiority of Christ .

4

Moses himself wrote in Deut. 18: “The Lord Thy God will raise unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee, of they brethren like unto me, and unto Him shall ye hearken.”
And In John 1:45 Philip the disciple said to Nathaniel “We have found him of whom Moses spoke in the law, Jesus of Nazareth.”

Jesus is greater than Moses, and as exalted as Moses was Christ Jesus is greater by far.
He has to prove this if he is to prove that the new covenant brought by Christ is better than the old one brought by Moses.

Moses was faithful in his household , his area of administration, Israel.

And verse 2 says Christ is faithful too. Verse 3 says he is counted worthy of more honor than Moses. Why? Moses was a faithful servant in the house, Christ is the SON of God, the founder, the builder and inheritor of the household. Who is the household of God today? Eph 2:19 says it is his church, We are the household of God. And it is the Son who cares for us, not the most exalted servant.

As Moses was faithful to an earthly house so Christ is faithful to his spiritual household, telling us in his word all we need to know.

So the difference between Moses and Christ is that Moses was a servant and Christ is the Son. Moses was a member of the spiritual house, Christ created it. (a statement that Christ is God here Look at verse 4. Who built all things? God! who built the house? Jesus! So who is Jesus: He is God)

The faithful Son.

5

The Bible says it is expected in a steward that he be faithful. You and I are Stewards. All have gifts to use here, and if you aren’t faithful in using your gifts you are not a faithful steward.

Some of you maybe can teach but don’t study diligently , You are not a faithful Steward. Some of you may have evangelistic gifts, but don’t do that. You aren’t a faithful steward.
God’s gifts to you demand your faithfulness, use your gifts for God.

Now lastly we see in verses 5-6 Jesus not only superior in Office and work, but also in Person. Jesus’ person is superior. Moses was a servant, Jesus is the Son.

John 8:35 < And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.> Servants come and go but sons are for life.

Verse 5 Moses was faithful as a servant . He sues an exalted word for servant here used of angels and prophets with the idea of dignity. Moses was faithful, in Exodus 40 alone Moses obedience is referred to 8 times. IN Ex. 35-40 22 times. Can God say that of you? Are you faithful as a servant of God.

Now look at what is compared here. Not Moses failures, but his faithfulness, His excellence. Christ is superior to Moses’ excellence.
Moses was faithful as a testimony of things yet to be. Judaism without Christ is the shadow of things with no substance. (Heb. 10:1For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.)

6

John 5: 46 , Jesus says “If you had believed Moses, you’d have believed in me, for he testified of me.”

The law is a shadow of Christ, Moses pointed to Jesus. Moses was faithful, but as a servant.

But Look at verse 6: “Heb 3:6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we” Eph 2:22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Moses was a servant, Jesus is the Son so Jesus is greater than Moses and we are his house.

Are you sorry for being left out of Judaism? Look what you have. Eternally YOU are the house of God.

“If you hold fast the confidence and rejoicing firm unto the end
?”

You might look at that and say “can I lose my salvation by not hanging on?” NO, what the writer is saying here is this. It is not “how are you behaving in the house,” but “are you in the house?” The point here is perseverance of the saints. Those who are saved will continue, it is the proof of reality of faith.

He quotes Psalm 65 here and shows that Israel, in the desert had proof that God was real and there by many miracles but they didn’t believe. Here they had the gospel confirmed to them by signs and miracles (2:4, & 6:5) yet some do not believe. And continuing is proof. If you continue in God’s word you show, prove you are in Christ. If you do not continue in Christ it is because you never were in Christ.

Jesus said that he would lose NONE that the father gave him in John 6:39.

7

In first John 2:19 John speaks of those who had left “If they were of us, they would have stayed with us.
Your commitment to Christ is the proof of your conversion to Christ.
Col. 1:22 says. “you are his if you continue in the faith.”

You may see people make an emotional commitment to God, but it is only a flash in the pan. Here today, gone tomorrow. But as Moses was faithful as a servant, and Christ is faithful as a high priest, then true believers in Christ will remain faithful.

Examine your life. Are you real? Do you strive to please God and do you continue in the faith?

Like these Christian Jews are you hung up on the religious and not resting in the savior?
Be faithful! Use your gifts and abilities for Him.
