Gen 47:13-ff
Service with Honor

1. The Motive of Service: Success of the Master (Glory of God) Here we see an example of true and pure servant hood. Here, in a tough and tempting situation is someone devoted to honor all he believes in by serving with honor the Master God has placed over him. I want to note a few things about this steward of Pharaoh, Things that if we would observe with equal diligence would affect our lives for the good and the Kingdom of God for the better.

Joseph established His M.O. as a slave and practiced it a prisoner and now perfects it as Second in command in the Land of Egypt. His motive is service to the Master, He lives to make the Master successful. That in us is called living for the Glory of God.

We first see our need because we fall short of the Glory of God: Ro 3: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

The Glory of God is of utmost importance, it is a matter of life and death. To fall short of it, to fail to attain to its magnificent brilliance is to perish eternally.

Scary if that's all there is, but that's only a part .1 Cor 5:7 Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

Because one facet of God's being is mercy, he saw a way to exalt his glory by dying in our place and if we accepted that sacrifice he would receive us, and that also is to the Glory of God. So our damnation was for failing to attain that glory. our salvation was to further that glory. Now we are his there is one more important thing:

1Co 10:31* Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

We are to continue to live in such a way as to say to those who watch: “See, God's glory is not wasted. I am becoming more like Him, He died to take away sin and its leaving, I am growing. “

But note carefully that this verse has a motive statement and it is from a context of living so as to not be an offense to the gospel. God wants us to live with the motive that HIS GLORY is exalted. If he says wives be submissive then they have to have a motive other than to get HIM to change.. It is hard to live that way. If he says HUSBANDS LOVE LIKE JESUS LOVES, we have to have a motive that will last because there is no way we will stick to it otherwise.

If he says Deal properly with anger, we need a motive that will stick. Whatever we do it must be for God's glory not for our own reputation's sake.

If he says “Joseph, be a slave , be falsely accused and be thrown into prison, an Oh yeah JO trust me.

And if it looks as if there's earthly help and it fails and God still asks obedient trust then Joseph has to have one motive and only one. To make his master successful. That means He lives for the glory of God.

Now that is shown in Joseph's case by his attitude toward his earthly masters . He Makes them successful.. Potiphar is blessed and prospers, the prison situation is bettered, and Pharaoh becomes Suzerain over all of Egypt under the guidance of this servant of JHVH.

The motive of servant hood is This : To honor and advance God's Agenda.(period)

I do not know what your struggle is but I do know God wants you to honor and exalt Him in it. That does not necessarily mean saying hallelujah, it does mean submission to the will of God with a right heart. NO matter what it is, how bad it looks God's first agenda is God's Glory.

Even when it comes to illness and death, God is in charge. HE owns us. and Look at what he said about Lazarus sickness and death:

Joh 11:4 When Jesus heard [that], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

So the Motive of a true servant is to put forth God's agenda.

Now note with me if you will : The Model of a servant: These are indicated in Joseph and in the people who sell out to Pharaoh, both in a leader and in a follower.

First I want to note the servant hood exhibited in a leader of people. In Titus we may note the qualities of a biblical leader. One thing we notice is that a leader needs to be just, righteous, observing divine laws equitable straight . Also keeping the commands of God. In some places this is translated as innocent, faultless, guiltless in one sense it is used of someone whose way of thinking, feeling, and acting is wholly conformed to the will of God, and who therefore needs no correction in the heart or life [only Christ] truly approved of or acceptable of God.

In a narrower sense, rendering to each his due and that in a judicial sense, passing just judgment on others, whether expressed in words or shown by the manner of dealing with them [Jesus example with Judas. No one knew after 3 years that he was the betrayer even though Jesus knew]

Then, hand in hand with that we need to see that A leader is not : not self-willed.

Do you know what a hedonist is? It is someone who seeks his or her own pleasure. That is a term that comes directly from the word translated “self willed” “self-pleasing,” “ arrogant.”

If I came here because of the money, the power, the status, any other reason than to teach God's word in God's way, then I better get out while the getting is good. It cannot be MY agenda that's pushed here, not even your agenda. Self will, my interests, the way I see things. has to be tempered by the revealing word of God.

I guess that really is put to the test by what happens when I am crossed. Or what happens when someone treats me badly or you badly. How do you respond? Is it in an arrogant “I'm right” way, or do I or do you honestly take a biblical second look.

So we see with Joseph he was: . Not self centered. Not self willed, Not lining his own pockets or fostering his own agenda.

Next thing we need to note a bout a true servant of the king is: He does not fleece the sheep (not give away i.e. not work not eat ,took live stock and fed it too)

Joseph was in a position here to gain Personal advantage. He could have made deals that would have built himself a marvelous future and stood his family in stead for generations to come. But instead all he did benefited the one He called king.

That's the way it is with a true servant/leader. He looks to the real master, the real sovereign. And Joseph looked past Pharaoh to the Almighty God. Joseph made deals but not for HIMSELF.

Another thought here, that attitude also extends to control of peoples wills. A true shepherd servant does Not demand obedience of the sheep to His Own self but to the high king.

Those are things you need to expect of your leadership and of your selves as well.

But lets look deeper in the attitudes of the people here and see what real servant hood entails as a basic attitude. Look at verse 23 ff Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, [here is] seed for you, and ye shall sow the land. And it shall come to pass in the increase, that ye shall give the fifth [part] unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones. And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants.

.A true servant understands that he or she does Not Have Ownership of him or her Self.

A Bondsman or Bond slave is one who gives himself up to another's will , those whose service is used by Christ in extending and advancing his cause among men. It carries the thought of one

devoted to another to the disregard of one's own interests .

1 Cor 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

1Co 7:23 Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.

Willingly Serve the Master v 25Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants.

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Reasonable service? Total Sacrifice? Luke 17: 7 But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink?

Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.

So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

Willing service for the love master who bought you is in view here.

NOTE Exodus 21:1 6 also in this vein. Have you become a willing servant?

1Co 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

(Those who do not get involved in service usually become complainers)

The Egyptians gained security and life by service to the Pharaoh. Did you know that you rewards are greater yet?

Mt 25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done, [thou] good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

Take stock In J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord Of The Rings” Frodo Baggins , After he could not remain in the homeland he nearly died for, went on to the elven lands. Sam Gamgee, His friend and companion in those struggles says he thought they'd enjoy the Shire for years and years. But Frodo says “,In every time there are those who must give up something in order to save it for others.”

The price of your salvation is Jesus life . you live by his death.. So serve
